Seven Years of Bad LUCK BY J.L MAC

When twenty-six year old Kathleen Cooper realizes that she forfeited her dreams and aspirations of becoming a lawyer after a brash decision to run off and marry the insanely charming Aidan Cooper, she decides to regain what she lost over the course of their seven-year relationship and start fresh.

With a renewed sense of hope and determination, she moves to a different city, lands a new job, and meets the handsome Benjamin Chase in a serendipitous way.

But even with all of these changes and hopes of gaining a new life, Kathleen is still not happy with the person she sees in the mirror staring back at her. She is an insomniac. She generally has bad luck in just about everything she attempts. She’s clumsy, and even if Prince Charming fell into her lap, she would likely push him in the opposite direction, for fear of getting hurt or worse, hurting someone else. This time she can’t blame any of these things on her bad luck or her destructive marriage. This time, it’s not her heart that’s in danger. This time, she has much more to lose and everything to gain.

Will she realize her mistakes in time to repair the damage?
Will she be able to reverse her shattered self-image and discover true happiness?
Will she ever find her way back to the person she was before seven years of bad luck?

Chill bumps spread like a fierce wildfire across the surface of my skin. I couldn’t tell if Ben noticed or not. I hoped that he didn’t. He leaned slightly to his left and deposited his coffee cup onto an end table. Then it was his turn to break our intense silence, and boy, he didn’t just break the silence, he shattered it into a million pieces along with my stupid ploy and formerly bolstered, but newly absent, courage. Apparently, once Ben spoke, my smart-mouthed inner Kat disappeared in a hurry. His voice came out low and rough; each syllable that rolled off his tongue seemed to stroke me internally, causing my stomach to flip and flutter wildly.
“Kathleen, am I the one to thank for these chill bumps, all over your skin or did something else do this for you?” As he spoke to me, he lifted his right hand and lightly brushed the backs of his long fingers down my right upper arm then swirled a light circle around my elbow and continued down the sensitive inner skin of my forearm, skating across my flesh with barely-there strokes from his nimble fingers.
I kept my eyes cast away from his. I seemed incapable of looking directly into his eyes. I felt as if looking straight into those glowing depths of vivid blue would cause me to be swallowed up whole and pulled beneath the surface to blissfully drown in him. The fierce sexual energy that permeated the air around Ben made it difficult to breathe, and it intimidated me.  I chose not to answer him. Or perhaps I couldn’t answer him.
“Kathleen, look at me.” His commanding tone and presence was hard to challenge even from a distance and far more grueling a task within such close quarters. I could smell him, I could feel the warmth from his body radiating outward, and I could clearly hear each breath he drew from the space between us and pulled down to fill his lungs. I felt a powerful crimson, heated blush roll through my veins. It coursed throughout my body leaving evidence of my arousal in its wake. My skin heated, and my neck and cheeks flushed into a hot red. I realized that I was helplessly adrift in a sea of desire and arousal and that battling the current would be useless. I could either embrace the journey along the formidable pull of the current, or I could fight in vain against Mother Nature, knowing that undoubtedly I would lose.
“Look at me. Answer my question.” I lifted my eyes from the floor, but still avoided his stare.
He extended his long index finger and placed the pad of it beneath my chin and encouraged my head to tilt back, forcing my eyes to meet his. The moment we locked eyes, my breathing halted , and I felt my stomach flip and flutter all over again with a heightened need that exceeded any feeling I had experienced before it, ever. I battled against myself for composure so that I could finally answer him. I had not the faintest idea of what I would say, but I knew I needed to say something. My eyes darted around a bit, and he released my jaw, giving me an opportunity to speak.
            Tit for tat, I thought.
“You never answered my own question, Mr. Chase.” I made a point to emphasize his name in hopes that sounding more like his employee would bring a halt to his request for an answer. I was hoping we could end this torturous little tango that had me tied up in knots.
No, Kat. You wish Ben had you tied up. He hasn’t done it yet
And with that sarcastic little jab to my sex life (or lack thereof), the inner Kat sauntered back into my head as if she had merely stepped away for a moment, but didn’t go too far.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 Original Stars!

Okay so let me just stress how difficult it was for me to wrap my mind around this book. I'm not sure how much to say as I don't want to spoil for anyone, but I will say this. Hero is New Rhone's saviour with the rising crime in the city, and the looming threat that is the cartel, Hero seems to be the towns only salvation. Law enforcement sees him as an annoyance, a vigilante hell bent on showing them up. The public idolises him, he does what Law enforcement has failed to do time and time again. He seeks out villains and vagrants and doles out his own personal brand of punishment.

My bare hands have served me well so far. They are my weapons. My skin my shield, my strength, my lifeline, and Cataline, my motivation

Cataline is a nobody, she's quiet, always in the background. She doesn't date, she's saving herself for the right guy, she worships Hero and covets Calvin her boss. Both these men elude her, but she still daydreams. Until one day she's taken and when she discovers her captor's identity all her dreams and hopes are bashed.

"If you're thinking of flying, Sparrow, know that I will catch you. There is no escape. Fly until your wings fall off, or until there is no sky, but I will always find you."

And that's about all you're gonna get from me about this book!

Analysis

Okay you can't tell me you've never imagined Superman or Batman was for real and that he'd sweep you away and you'd live happily ever after! You haven't??? Well now you my secret!

I've actually never thought to read a book like this, most books with this type of theme are usually lacking in the romance and erotica part. What I mean to say is, they're normally written for men by men... So, here's why I gave this book 4 stars, someone actually wrote a book like this for women! Thank you! Here's why I hesitated to give it a 4, the lack of detail. I won't say exactly what, but I needed more info, the what, why, where and how. Look the book engaged me, shocked me at times. The sex was hot and sometimes uncomfortable to read.

And now for my favourite question... Was it dark?

Yes, in a taboo kind of way, I really don't think there was any non-con maybe some reluctance but all scenes were ultimately enjoyed by both parties involved lol. I think it was the actual sex scenes that were taboo, one in particular that I won't mention. There was also a healthy does of dirty talk. The word that comes to mind when I think of this book is: Questionble. I know it makes no sense, but there you are.

I read it, I was never bored, I loved the characters, although I wanted to kill Cataline at times. But what more do you need from a book???

Summer Sky by Lisa Swallow Cover Reveal, Excerpt and Giveaway

Book title: Summer Sky by Lisa Swallow
Series: Blue Phoenix #1
Genre: Contemporary romance

Sky changed her life for a man once, and she has no intention of doing it again - even if he is a six foot, tattooed rock god who makes a mean bacon sandwich.

Sky Davis is fed up of boyfriend Grant taking her for granted and when she comes home to find him wearing a girl, Sky suspects the relationship is over. She takes an unscheduled holiday and leaves the life (and guy) she hates behind.

Rock star Dylan Morgan is struggling with fame and infamy, sick of his life being controlled by other people. Dylan cuts his hair and walks away from his role as lead singer of Blue Phoenix, leaving chaos and speculation behind.

Outside the English seaside town of Broadbeach their cars and worlds collide.

Sky decides Dylan is an arrogant guy with too many tattoos, and Dylan is amused by the smart-mouthed girl with no idea who he is. Dylan and Sky soon discover they’ve travelled to Broadbeach for the same reason - to escape from reality back to a place with happy childhood memories.

Losing themselves in a world where they know nothing about each other, Sky and Dylan begin a summer romance that soon heats up their rainy English summer.

Fantasies can’t last forever and when reality crashes the party, Sky isn’t sure she wants to be more than his ‘summer Sky’ but Dylan doesn’t want to let her go.

Returning to the real world and public scrutiny isn’t their only problem. Blue Phoenix bass player, Jem Jones, has a reason for wanting Sky out of Dylan’s life, and is determined to come between them. Some things won’t stay hidden, even when they’re paid to ‘go away’.

Summer Sky is a quirky romance where occasionally more than the bacon sizzles. This is the first in the new ‘Blue Phoenix’ series of contemporary rock star romances.

Please note: this is a romance with a rock star hero, and not an erotic rock star book!

"Sky! Waves!"

I have my back to the ocean and a wave crashes against my legs, destabilising me. I regain my footing and attempt to move before the retreating water sucks my feet into the sand. At that moment a larger wave wipes me completely, dragging my body underwater. I panic at the confusion of being pushed and pulled out of my control, seawater swirling hair into my face and the bubbles rushing into my ears. The shell remains tightly gripped in my hand.

As water draws away, I push my head free. Dylan stands on the edge of the shore, water lapping his ankles, laughing. I spit out sea water and stagger to my feet. The weight of the damp hoodie threatens to pull me down again as I push hair from my eyes.

"That was fucking funny! You should see your face!" He wades towards me, arm outstretched to help.

Attempting to keep my footing, I lunge at him and slap his hard chest with both palms. "It was not! Screw you!” Dylan catches my arms as I make contact, and pulls me towards him.

Scrutinizing my face briefly, Dylan takes my cheeks in his broad palms and crushes his lips against mine. I gasp again, but it's not the sea snatching my breath this time. A new wave sways us, and Dylan holds my face tightly, his own footing steady as his mouth claims mine. A small voice in my head asks what the hell I’m doing but I ignore it - Dylan overwhelms all common sense the moment I have any physical contact with him. Losing myself in his mint-flavoured kiss, in the slide of his cool tongue, I yield to the power he holds over me. Dylan curls his fingers into my wet hair and pulls me closer; I respond with a deep kiss, tracing fingers across his stubbled cheek.

Fierce or gentle, his kisses mould my soul to his as perfectly as his body shapes with mine, as if we’re in a place created by our coming together. Kissing Dylan last night pulled me into his orbit, and when I see stars again, I swear his kisses will always take me to the edge of his galaxy. If Dylan can remove me from reality with just this, god knows what anything else he's skilful at would do to me. The thought of us skin on skin, united through more than a kiss, lights a fire deep inside that would take more than the cold Cornish sea to extinguish.

Dylan loosens his grip on my hair and slides his hands across my damp back. He closes the final gap between us as our bodies meet, and I wish the rain-soaked clothes weren’t in the way. “I have never met anyone so…” He grasps for a word then gives up and rests his forehead on mine. “I feel as if I’ve waited my whole life to meet you and then suddenly you’re here.”

For a moment I consider whether he’s teasing me again, but I guess I’m very different to the people in his real life. "I can honestly say I've never met anyone like you, Dylan Morgan."

He wipes water from my cheek with cool, damp fingers. "No-one’s met Dylan Morgan apart from you. Not for a lot of years, anyway.”

I stare at the truth reflected in his pale blue eyes, unable to believe any of this is reality. His grip on my back loosens, and I step back. Rain drips down his face, soaking through his T-shirt and clinging to his body in a way that does nothing to help my mounting desire to get my hands on him.

A subject change is needed rapidly, before I begin drooling.

Off the Record (Record, #1)Off the Record by K.A. Linde
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

★★★★ 4 stars!

Off the Record was a refreshing, fast-paced, sexy story that I really enjoyed reading. Once I started it, I could not put it down and I was anxious to find out how the storyline would develop. The fascinating political aspects of the story and the many deliciously forbidden encounters made the story all the more fun to read!

When young college reporter Liz Dougherty asks one question at State Senator Brady Maxwell III at her first press conference ever, she never expected her life to change so drastically. Her question managed to both impress the senator and catch him off guard. She intrigues him and when she runs into him later that day, he makes her a proposition.

"You want to see me. I want to see you. Call me. If you don't, you'll regret it."

At first, Liz is hesitant at pursuing an affair with such a public figure, especially since she doesn't exactly agree with many of the senator's public point of views on in his campaign. Still, the moment she first laid eyes on him she felt an instant attraction to the handsome eligible bachelor and the fact that he obviously felt the same way, makes it almost impossible for her to turn down his offer.

And so their relationship begins. Or is it a relationship? The lines are a bit blurry seeing as everything has to happen on Brady's terms. He decides when and where they can see each other and they can never, ever be seen in public because then both of their careers would likely be destroyed.
"This is almost whatever you want it to be. It's not public. It's not in the news. It's not a point the campaign can use against me. It's a woman and a man taking what they can in a world where it's not feasible for us to be together."

What did bother me sometimes about Liz and Brady was their lack of communication and the fact that there was a case of insta-lust/love. At first it was lust and then it quickly turned into love. The first I could understand but I failed to see their strong emotional connection…at least during the first half of the story; after that their relationship did start to grow deeper even though there still wasn't a lot of talking.

"Why does it always have to be sex first and talk later?"

And then there's also Hayden Lane, the chief editor at the college newspaper where Liz works. For the past two years Liz has had a crush on him without him ever returning the sentiment. Now since she's started seeing Brady, Hayden has been showing more of an interest in her as well and her old feelings toward him bubbling up again only makes matters more complicated. I wouldn't say there was a full on love triangle between Brady, Liz and Hayden but there were some conflicting emotions and tough choices to be made.

The story does end with a bit of a cliffhanger, but not the kind that makes you want to pull your hair out and regret you started reading the book before the sequel was out. It just leaves open a lot of possible outcomes for the future. Still, from now on I'll be anxiously awaiting the sequel and I do hope (view spoiler).

"So...that's it then? You're choosing the campaign."
"It's never been a choice. I'm stubborn. I want both."

EXCERPT

Sarah Dalton – The Blemished

Once, my mum told me a story about a princess, and it began with her stuck in a castle. My story begins with my head stuck in the toilet.
It was my first day in Area 14 and my first opportunity to make a good impression at the school appropriately named St Jude’s. Any school with the Blemished as pupils deserved the saint of lost causes as their patron. I’d approached the old Victorian building with a hopeful feeling; this was a new start, a chance to finally make friends. But it was the same hopeful feeling which was beaten away within the hour. An hour was all it took for a GEM to push my head down the toilet and flush.
Her bony hand squeezed my skull. Water pulled my skin. It flooded my nose. I choked and my fingernails scraped the porcelain.  I thought ¬– this is how I am going to die, with my face being sucked down a drain. Then, I almost did it again. In the twitch of my fingers I felt the urge to do the one thing my father told me I could never do. The thing which would get us both killed.
“Now you know your place, Blem,” said the girl. She released me and I gasped for air. “Next time I won’t let you go.”
Her heels sounded against the tiles and the girl and her group ran off in giggles. I dragged myself up from the floor with shaking legs. At the sink, I took a deep breath and tried to calm my pounding heart and quell the rising disappointment. This was supposed to be my fresh start away from Area 10. I removed my headscarf and laughed. Moving here was supposed to keep me safe. Like my dad said – out of the frying pan and into the fire.
“If you can’t stand the heat…” I mumbled to myself.
“Are you all right?”
I jumped. When I turned there was a dark skinned girl staring at me sheepishly with a charming gap-toothed smile. On her black tunic she wore the Symbol of the Blemished – a circle containing a simple cross to remind us how we are the cross that society has to bear. Just like me. She was slightly plump and I estimated her age at fourteen, perhaps a tall thirteen, with pretty brown eyes.
“I’m sorry I didn’t step in…” she trailed off and stared down at her hands which never stopped worrying the long sleeves of her tunic.
“Don’t worry,” I said. “There’s no point both of us getting a beating.” I forced a smile to show no hard feelings. After all, I needed at least one ally in this awful school. I turned back to the sink and squeezed at my soaked headscarf.
“It’s just that, well, these toilets are GEM only and I only popped in because I was desperate,” the girl rambled. “Elena Darcey is a total cow. She thinks she owns the school because she might have a shot at London.”
A jolt ran down my spine. I had to remind my hands to keep going.
“Are you sure you’re all right?” the girl asked, her face scrunched with concern.
“Perfectly,” I lied.
“I’m Angela by the way.” She stepped towards me but I didn’t turn around, just watched her in the bathroom mirror. “You must be Mina Hart, the new girl.” She laughed quietly. “We don’t get many new girls at St Jude’s. Well, at least none that are Blemished. Here, let me help. It’s the least I can do.”
Angela pulled the scarf from my fingers and stretched it out underneath the hand dryer. The dark fabric billowed out, reminding me of the Resistance flag. I’d seen photos of them protesting once, my dad showed me. But then I thought of her and I had to close my eyes to regain composure.
“Is it always like this here?” I asked to break the drone of the hand dryer, raising my voice above the noise.
“Elena is nothing compared to the teachers,” Angela replied with a sigh. “Don’t talk back to the GEMs or Murder-Troll will put all Blemished on cleaning duty after class.”
“Murder-Troll?”
“That’s what we call her – Mrs Murgatroyd. You’ll know why when you meet her.” Angela’s eyes widened to address her point, the whites bulged from her dark skin. She handed me back my headscarf. It was warm and soft. I pinned it into place, fingers working quickly through the folds, and Angela nodded as if in approval. “There you look like nothing ever happened! Come on, I’ll take you to kitchen duty. You’ll be fine with me.”
She led me through the echoing corridors of the old-fashioned school. It turned out I’d wandered into the GEM section, a place where Blemished were not allowed. The Ministry were strict on segregation – at least in schools – the Blemished had their place and the Children of the GEM, or GEMs as we called them, had everything else.
St. Jude’s made the most of its Victorian design which, at one time, separated boys from the girls. There were even two entrances and the School Council used these to ensure GEM and Blemished never had to mix. As she pulled me through corridors and swing doors it was quite clear from dingy grey, paint peeled walls that we had moved into the Blemished quarters. I noted our symbol painted neatly onto a classroom door, the only spot of fresh paint.
“What are your classes like?” I asked.
“The usual,” she said with a shrug. “Kitchen duties, needlework, cleaning class and sex Ed. Gardening in the spring.”
I nodded. The same as Area 10. With a sinking feeling I realised that despite fleeing my old home everything would remain the same. They would figure out my secret and then we’d have to run away again, leaving my friends and home behind.
“Excuse me. I think I’m lost.”
The sound of a male voice in the Blemished corridors startled us both, and we spun around in unison. Our heads would have collided if my headscarf hadn’t caught on a protruding nail from the wall to the right. It yanked me backwards ripping the scarf away and letting my damp hair tumble around my face. I shrieked and tugged, but it was stuck.
“Can I help you with that?” said the boy.
He was a GEM, he had to be. There were no Blemished people with skin as perfect. He was around my age – fifteen – with black eyes and brown hair. He had the chiselled look to his face that GEMs usually prefer; high-cheekbones and a strong jaw which often made them seem cruel. But this time the enhancements had stopped at just the right moment to achieve balance in his good-looks.
“No,” I said sharply. “You can’t help me.” I placed a warning hand between us, palm up. The boy should know the boundaries between Blemished and GEMs. I wondered why he was acting so friendly.
Angela helped me with my headscarf, our fingers working together in the tangle.
“You need to go down the corridor, turn left and through the swing doors to get to the GEM side of the school,” Angela said hurriedly, her eyes never meeting his. “You shouldn’t be talking to us.”
“I’m sorry,” he said. “It’s just that it’s my first day here and I don’t know…”
I finally pulled the scarf from the nail and hastily covered my hair. “We’re Blemished and you are GEM.”
“My name is Sebastian,” he said, ignoring my warning. He held out a hand for me to shake. “What’s yours?”
Whether it was the surprise of a GEM wanting to know my name or the way Sebastian’s eyes seemed to search my own – I don’t know. But I found myself putting my hand in his, feeling the instant warmth of his skin. It sent tingles of heat through my fingertips and along my arms.
“My name is Mina,” I breathed. “Mina Hart.”
“What a beautiful name,” he said.
I couldn’t control it any longer. My fingers twitched again and the door behind us swung open, almost knocking Angela over. Sebastian and I broke our contact and I backed away self-consciously, aware of my red cheeks and disorganised headscarf. Sebastian smiled and walked away leaving us alone in the corridor. At least, I’d thought we were alone. As I turned towards the entrance to the kitchen I was aware of someone watching us.
A middle-aged woman, thin to the extreme and sour faced, stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms folded tightly across a bulging chest. She was exactly like the kind of woman I had seen in the rich part of Area 10, the mothers of the first generation of clones who are desperate to be as beautiful as their genetically modified daughters. They could never be GEM so rely on the surgeon for nips and tucks and silicone and Botox until their faces concaved and protruded almost comically.
There was nothing comic about this woman; the look on her face chilled me bone-deep. The collagen in her lips made her mouth baggy and shiny, like slugs inside loose skin. Her cheekbones were too high and puffed outwards and upwards before disappearing into gaunt cheeks. Her forehead had the kind of shiny quality of a cheap plastic doll or stretched cellophane. Bright red tumbling curls sprouted from her head in an unruly and fierce fashion making me think of Boudicca, the warrior woman from ancient times. She didn’t say a word to us, only beckoned with a finger and disappeared through the doorway. Angela looked at me and I heard the “gulp” in her throat.
I suppressed a shudder. I knew instantly that this woman was not to be crossed. I knew instantly that this woman would not approve of a Blemished girl touching a GEM boy and it was at this moment that I realised just how dire my first day at St. Jude’s had turned out.

Well at least things can’t get any worse, I thought to myself.

Dream cast

For The Blemished
Mina:

I always thought Kaya Scodelario would make an awesome Mina. She has a lot of charisma, but a troubled edge about her. She portrays emotion really well without being dramatic. And there’s something a little bit wild and a little bit difficult about her. Mina has a rebellious heart and always ends up running towards danger.
Daniel:

Who doesn’t want Liam Hemsworth in their YA film, right? I’m stealing him from the Hunger Games, and he doesn’t have to dye his hair this time! Daniel has had possibly one of the worst upbringings ever, and yet he still has a lot of love in his heart. He’s a positive influence on all the characters in The Blemished. In fact, he’s the moral compass of the entire series. Playing Daniel would be a big ask. You need an actor who everyone likes.
Angela:

I’m stealing someone else from the Hunger Games – Amandla Stenberg, who is perfect for Angela. Unlike Rue, Angela features throughout the entire series. She’s Mina’s best friend. Angela’s character goes through real growth throughout the series. She begins as very naïve, and very blinkered when it comes to other characters, and very vulnerable to influence. But as she grows up, she becomes wise and brave and loving.
Sebastian:

Sebastian is a GEM, that means he is genetically perfect, and well, rather attractive. Enter Max Irons with cheekbones. When you read The Blemished, you won’t know whether to love or to hate him. But his character probably changes the most throughout the series. Sebastian has to break a cycle that begun with his father, and that takes a lot of guts.
Jonathon Hart:

This is going to totally make everyone think of Giles when they read the book, but I did sort of think of him myself when writing Mina’s dad. He’s a complex man who does things that don’t make sense at first. He’s also a mentor and a trainer, and someone who believes he has Mina’s best interests at all times. But, without getting too spoilerish, let’s just say that it’s not only the teenage characters who make some whopping mistakes!
Elena:

Elena is hard to cast! So for now I’m going with Nina Dobrev, although she has the wrong colour eyes. Elena begins as a pretty nasty character, someone who many of you will recognise from school as the ringleader of the bullies. But Elena becomes really important to the series. And, well, I’ll let you find out what happens to her character… In the ‘Elena’ novella you see an entirely different side to her.
Mrs Murgatroyd:

I’ve known for some time that there’s only one person who could play Mrs Murgatroyd – AKA Murder Troll – and that’s Nicole Kidman. They’d have to make her a little bit nastier looking, but she would be perfect. No one does cold like Nicole, and my goodness Murgatroyd is one cold as ice character. I love a good villain. But there’s another side to Margaret Murgatroyd. In the ‘Maggie’ novella, I bring that side out.
